CATALAN STROKEPLAY CHAMPIONSHIPS

Thrilling finish in both Ladies and Gents

A total of 398 players signed up for the annual national men's scratch cup. The final four rounds were played in Guissona at the end of June. After two rounds Enric Sanz, with 10 under, had a five shot advantage. The final nine holes proved to be a Thriller. Fernando Cano, Marcal Moré and Ramon Jardi shared the lead. Enric, however, fought back with birdies on the 16th and 17th and managed to salvage a bogey on the final hole from the heavy rough. The fourth round ended with a three-way tie and forced Cano, Sanz and Jardi to a sudden death playoff. All square after the first hole. The tension and excitement was tremendous. Both Cano and Jardi pitched to a metre of the flag looking for birdies. Then Enric Sanz pitched short of the hole, but guess what - his ball rolled into the hole for a sensational hole-in-one! A fairytale, once in a life-time ending, or so one would think!

A week earlier, 120 ladies battled over two days for the national ladies championship. Nuri Dalmau teed up on the final hole with a one stroke lead, but had to be satisfied with an unfortunate bogey while Abby Nachson tied with a par. With another playoff being discussed with the referee, Marta Mota in the final group, one shot behind, sent her tee shot straight into the 18th hole for an ace and victory!

What a wonderful game we have!
